We build transmissions in house. Our Master Transmission builder has over 35yrs build experience and has worked on transmissions for County Cab, USPS, Southwest Airlines and many others.

Transmissions have progressed through the years and it takes a lifetime of dedication to keep up with the ever changing designs to modern transmissions. There are over 3000 working parts and any one of those parts could cause problems and may require a complete disassembly of your transmission to find the cause. When your build is complete the transmission will be better than the original factory design with the upgrades we install for smooth reliability.

Our competitively priced transmission services include:

Automatic Transmission
Automatic Transmissions shift between gears automatically to optimize driving, and changes gears based on the driver's throttle pedal, vehicle speed, engine speed, and vehicle load. Typical automatic transmissions have 4-5 forward gear ratios, a Reverse, Park, and Neutral gear. Shifting gears occur automatically once the car is in Drive and there is no need for a clutch pedal or gear shift like there is in a Manual Transmission. Automatic transmission repair is complicated based on all the components that make it up, and you need to have any automatic transmission issues properly assessed by auto mechanics. Call 314-733-5455 to talk to the mechanics of Reliable Automotive about your transmission problems.

Clutch
Your car's clutch serves the vital function of enabling the engine and gearbox to engage and disengage during gear changes. This process allows the engine's output shaft to keep spinning while relieving pressure on the gears, preventing them from shifting improperly.

After the next gear is smoothly selected, the clutch re-engages the engine and gearbox, restoring forward momentum. Over time, particularly in manual transmission vehicles operated incorrectly, the clutch can wear down, diminishing its effectiveness. A damaged clutch can lead to mid-gear change re-engagements of the engine and gearbox, which can significantly impact your transmission's health.

Four-Wheel Drive Transmission
A four-wheel (4x4) drive vehicle has differential gears, both front and rear axles, and a transfer case attached to the transmission. Four-wheel drive vehicles demand maintenance on the transfer case, front differentials, rear differentials, and transmission fluids. Visit us on 10708 Lilac Ave for service on your four-wheel drive transmission services.

Front-Wheel Drive Transmission
In front-wheel drive vehicles, the engine exclusively drives the front wheels. Power flows through the transmission to the final drive, then splits and propels the two front wheels through the drive axles. Front-wheel drive vehicles position the engine, transmission, and related components at the front of the car. For front-wheel drive transmission repairs, rely on Reliable Automotive in St. Louis, MO.

Manual Transmission
Driving a vehicle with a Manual Transmission requires using the clutch pedal and gear shift to manually shift gears based on the speed of the vehicle. Manual transmissions have been built with anywhere from two to eight gears. Front-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive are the two main configurations for manual transmissions. Typically, manual transmissions require less maintenance then automatic transmissions. At Reliable Automotive, our auto mechanics can diagnose your vehicle and then recommend the transmission repair or transmission service you need to ensure safety and improve the lifetime of your vehicle.

Transfer Cases
A transfer case is a part of a four wheel drive system found in four wheel drive and all wheel drive vehicles. The transfer case receives power from the transmission and sends it to both the front and rear axles. This can be done with a set of gears, but the majority of transfer cases manufactured today are chain driven. The transfer case is connected to the transmission and also to the front and rear axles by means of drive shafts.Trust the automotive experts at Reliable Automotive for all your transmission repairs.

Transmission Replacement
In motor vehicles, the term "transmission" usually refers to the gearbox. The transmission employs gears and gear trains to transmit speed and torque from a rotating power source to another device.

Vehicle owners can opt for the replacement of their car's transmission with a new, rebuilt, remanufactured, repaired, or used transmission. Our seasoned service technicians can guide you in making the best decision for your vehicle and budget.

Transmission Fluid FAQs

How often do you really need to change transmission fluid?
It's important to change your transmission fluid, but the type of transmission you have affects your ideal changing interval. Most cars on the road today have an automatic transmission. If you drive a car with an automatic transmission you need to change your transmission fluid every 60,000 to 100,000 miles. If your car has a manual transmission, it's recommended that you get the transmission fluid changed every 30,000 to 60,000 miles.

What are signs that you need to change your transmission fluid?
The most obvious sign that it is time to change your transmission fluid is a warning light on the dashboard. Other signs may include the car's engine revving when you accelerate or go around corners, difficulty shifting, a chattering noise when you start driving, a slight burning smell or a puddle under your car. Like always, if you are uncertain about a noise, leak or feeling, we encourage you to bring your vehicle to us here at Reliable Automotive in St. Louis.

Does a car run better after transmission fluid change?
Yes. Changing your car's transmission fluid regularly is a great way to improve fuel efficiency. Your vehicle's transmission will run smoother after changing the fluid, which means your engine will perform better.

What is the average life of a transmission?
Regular fluid changes, filter replacements, and following a proper maintenance schedule are crucial for maximizing transmission life. Neglecting these can significantly shorten its lifespan. Most modern automatic transmissions, with proper maintenance, can last anywhere from 100,000 to 200,000 miles. Manual transmissions typically last longer, often exceeding 250,000 miles with good care.

Which type of transmission lasts the longest?
Opting for a manual transmission means simpler upkeep. They require less frequent servicing than automatics and aren't picky about specific oil types. Cars with stick shifts often enjoy a longer lifespan compared to their automatic siblings of the same model.

what our customers say

My 2000 BMW 323i broke down and would not start near St. Louis, MO during my drive from Cincinnati, OH to Los Angeles, CA. They towed my car to the auto shop and replaced the alternator. Although the shop closes at 5:30 pm and my car arrived after closing hours, they stayed until 8:00 pm to complete the job. I found the shop to be honest trustworthy and they changed a reasonable price for the work. I was able to continue my trip with only a two-hour delay. I consider myself lucky to have my car breakdown near this shop. I highly recommend this shop. They did an outstanding job.

Fast service.
H

Love this mechanic really great service and fast.
I

Honest and professional repair shop! I can't say enough positive things about the crew and owner of this shop. If I could add an extra star I would.... This is the type of shop you look for to regularly service your vehicle. On a recent road trip from PA to Colorado we had a mechanical issue that required immediate assistance. We were able to limp the vehicle into the shops parking lot on a Friday night at closing time. The owner and his son didn't shoo us away but instead put the vehicle on a lift to determine if they could get us back on the road. After about an hour, they made the necessary repair and we were on our way. The price was fair... actually better than fair considering our circumstance. Great guys with integrity and an exceptional sense of humor. Make this your "go to" shop.... I would if I weren't 600 mile away. Thanks again guys!
S

They are always expeditious, friendly, and priced well. I won't go anywhere else. Thank you!!
